Who are we?

Meet the team.

Three consultants sharing over 80 years of knowledge and experience in their specialist fields.

Dr Alan Reid

Alan Reid holds a BSc in Physics & Mathematics (1965) and MPhil in Geophysics (1968) from U of London, both by study at the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, and a PhD in Geophysics from U of Alberta in 1972. Subsequently he taught Physics and Geophysics at University of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and started and ran an MSc course in Exploration Geophysics. He published on aeromagnetic survey design and multichannel gamma ray analysis.

In 1982 Alan became Chief Geophysicist of the Tsumeb Corporation in Namibia (part of Newmont Mining). New experience included aeromagnetic surveys and time domain EM (the Newmont EMP system).

In 1987 Alan joined Robertson Research International (now Robertson CGG) in Llandudno, North Wales, UK and worked world-wide on petroleum and mining exploration. He developed grid Euler deconvolution (with colleagues) and conducted high sensitivity aeromagnetic surveys for sedimentary structure.

In 1994 Alan joined GETECH in Leeds, UK as Geophysical Research Manager and Principal Geophysicist and became involved in diamond prospecting and gravity tensor gradient research among other things.

Alan started Reid Geophysics as an independent consultancy in May 1999 and is currently a Director of Reid Geophysics Ltd.

Alan is a Visiting Research Fellow in the School of Earth & Environment, University of Leeds. Recent R&D work has involved work on the Enhanced Euler technique and on exploiting measured magnetic gradient data.

Alan is an active member of SEG and EAGE. Professional activities include Associate Editor of Geophysical Prospecting (after a long spell as Deputy Editor), reviewing papers for SEG and EAGE, and membership of the SEG’s Gravity & Magnetics Committee.

Mr Tim Archer

Tim Archer obtained a BSc in Geology & Physics from U of Natal, South Africa in 1992, followed by a BSc (Hons) in Geophysics from U of Witwatersrand, S Africa in 1993. He also holds a management diploma from U of Stellenbosch, South Africa.

From 1994-2001 Tim worked for Anglo American Corporation as an Exploration Geophysicist, primarily on their SPECTREM airborne TDEM system, operating in N & S America and Southern Africa.

After moving to the UK, Tim worked in software development, and is a capable developer in Delphi, Visual Basic and C#.

In 2004 Tim formed Arrow Geophysics, working primarily in Hazard Detection, using gravity, magnetometry, and a range of EM techniques (including ground penetrating radar).

In 2014 Tim took up responsibilities with Reid Geophysics as a Director and now manages the company operations. In November 2016, he purchased the business from Alan and his wife Christine.

Tim is a member of EAGE, PESGB and SEG. In addition, he serves on the Council of the Irish Association for Economic Geology (IAEG).

Artem Gorbunov

Artem Gorbunov holds BSc and MSc degrees in Geophysics from the Saint Petersburg State University (Russia). Since graduating, he has worked as a geophysicist in engineering and exploration applications. His experience includes geophysical surveys aimed at geotechnical and exploration tasks, covering different geological and climatic settings. Artem has worked with a variety of geophysical techniques including magnetic (ground and drone-borne) and electromagnetic (SP, DC-IP, CCR, GPR, MT/AMT), and photogrammetry.

He is experienced in all stages of the geophysical survey workflow (preparation for and carrying out field surveys, data processing and interpretation, and 2D/3D inversion).

Artem has experience in programming (Python, Java). His current interests lie in the sphere of machine learning as a tool for inferring additional information from geological and geophysical datasets.

Artem joined Reid Geophysics as a Senior Geophysicist in August 2021.
